There are many misconceptions that people have about addiction, but the fact is that addiction is a disease that affects over 20 million people in the U.S. alone. The only way to cure a disease is to first understand it. So here are some facts about addiction that you may not have known.
What is Addiction?
An addiction is a condition that results from the continued use of substances (such as illicit drugs or alcohol) or engagement in an activity (like gambling or watching pornography). These substances or acts can bring pleasure to the brain and cause it to want more. Pretty soon, it becomes a compulsion that is impossible to stop.
Researchers have learned that addiction actually affects your brain, which means that quitting is nearly impossible. A common belief is that people with addictions are weak or that they lack moral standards. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Anyone can develop an addiction, and due to the effect it has on your brain, quitting can seem nearly impossible.
What causes addiction?
We are lucky to live in an age where doctors and scientists know more than they ever have about addiction and its effects on our bodies. But there is still a lot we don’t know.
Statistics show us that family history, environment, and engaging in a habit-forming activity before your brain is developed (around your mid-20s) can all contribute to developing an addiction. However, you are not immune to addiction if you don’t fit into these categories. As stated earlier, anyone can become addicted to a substance or activity.
Is There a Cure?
Scientists and doctors are working tirelessly to study addiction and learn more about it, but unfortunately, there is no way to cure it or stop it from happening. It takes a lot of time, energy, and strength to overcome an addiction, but it is likely something that affects you for the rest of your life.
That being said, there are many things that can help you through the recovery process, including a support system of friends and family, therapy, and even medical treatment in some cases.
If you are dealing with an addiction, don’t lose hope. There are many different ways for you to recover. Empower Slave to None will soon be launching a program called C O R E FUSION, designed to help those who are battling with addiction.
